University of Nicosia Research Foundation focuses on global and local issues including health, complex networks, social sciences, education, ICT, engineering, and environmental sustainability. Researchers at UNRF are interested in examining challenges to modern life from a wide range of perspectives, including technological and scientific advances, modern culture and thought, and apply their expertise derived from addressing local, regional and national issues to global challenges and develop teams to bring disciplinary strengths together to approach key issues with global impact. UNRF’s researchers have substantial experience in the management and implementation of research projects, funded by the European Union and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and are currently involved in projects with a total budget of 1.3 million euros. Currently under the UNRF the following specialized centres have been created: Centre for Economic Studies (CES); Centre for Green Development and Energy Policy (CGD); Medical Research Institute (MRI); Research Centre for Social Work and Social Policy (RCSW); And Tourism & Transport Research Centre (TTRC). The UNRF researchers have access to the life and health sciences laboratories of the University of Nicosia.
Key Personnel
Dr Dimitrios Kanakis is a specialized Pathologist and Neuropathologist, and holds currently the position of Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Nicosia, Medical School. He teaches both in the 3rd-year of the MD6 Program as well as in the CS and T-years of the MBBS4 Program of St George’s University of London (delivered in Cyprus by the University of Nicosia, Medical School). His fields of research include Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Degenerative Diseases and Demyelinating Disorders, as well as other areas of Neuroscience. However, he has also published in various topics of General Pathology, such as Hematopathology and Gastrointestinal Pathology. He has co-authored 25 original Research Articles (Pubmed; March 2017) and he is Reviewer in several International Peer Reviewed Journals such as “Cancer Growth and Metastasis”, “Clinical Anatomy”, “Clinical Medicine Insights: Pathology”, “European Journal of Dermatology”, “Hippokratia”, “Human Pathology”, “Journal of Central Nervous System Disease”, “Journal of Experimental Neuroscience”, Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine” and “Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry”. Furthermore, he is Co-author of the Chapters “Concise Interpretation of useful Data in the Histological Diagnosis of Malignant CNSNeoplasms” and “CNS-Neoplasms in Adults: Diagnostic Algorithms, Histochemical, Immunohistochemical and Molecular Markers”, in the Book “Guidelines for the Histological Diagnosis of Malignant Neoplasms”, published by the Hellenic Society of Pathology. In addition, he has written together with Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Elmar Kirches the Chapter “PTTG (Securin) as Cancer Biomarker” in the Book “Biomarkers in Cancer” (Springer Publishers; 2015). Finally, Dr. Kanakis is the Editor of the Book “Pituitary Adenoma: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment Options” (Nova Science Publishers; 2016).
